OPPO has unveiled the full details of its ColorOS 12 based on Android 12.
The overall look of the new operating system comes with a "borderless design", and as the name suggests, ColorOS 12 doesn't use borders for separation. Each element is placed on a translucent layer called "acrylic sheet" and icons are called "acrylic icons". It also uses different shades of colours to differentiate between primary and secondary information.
ColorOS 12's new animation engine, Quantum Animation Engine 3.0, offers dynamic damping and extreme feedback, which allows the system to recognise different window component elements with different mass and inertia.
For a smooth performance, the AI Self-Smooth Engine 2.0 is claimed to be able to reduce memory usage by 30% and background power consumption by 20%, and increase battery life by 12%. The read and write degradation is less than 5% while the aging rate is 2.75% after 36 months of usage.
ColorOS 12 will include new features including the Free Floating Window, Smart Sidebar 2.0, Shared Atlas 2.0, Cross-Screen Interconnection, OMOJI, and Car+. As an enhanced version of FlexDrop in ColorOS 11, the Free Floating Window allows users to resize and move windows anywhere on the screen. The Smart Sidebar 2.0 supports smart functions on different usage scenarios like comparing prices when users shop online, identifying music when users listen to songs, providing real-time translation options when users watch foreign language videos, and offering a read-aloud function when users are reading content.
Users will be able to share multiple images at once to devices from any brand with the Shared Atlas 2.0. Meanwhile, the Cross-Screen Interconnection lets users transfer files between their smartphone and PC at a maximum speed of 45 MB/s. To transfer files, users would need a PC running Microsoft Windows 10 powered by Intel Core i3 processor and above paired with 8 GB of RAM, along with Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi Direct.
OMOJI is similar to Apple's Memoji where users can personalise 3D avatars that can mimic their expressions. The feature can be used in video calls, AOD (Always on Display), and more. On the other hand, the Car+ feature offers navigation, calls, music, video, and voice control like Google's Assistant Driving Mode.
As for security and privacy, ColorOS 12 comes with features like Privacy Dashboard, Approximate Location, and Notification Smart Anti-Peeping, which hides notifications from media sharing and others without metadata.
