Recently, OPPO Malaysia has teased a mid-range smartphone that is 5G capable. And today, min min is lucky enough to get my hands on the newest OPPO A series smartphone, the OPPO A78 5G.

Design

The OPPO A78 5G uses a dual-ring camera module that is placed on the glossy surface of the A78 5G, where the majority of the cover is covered with the matte-texture glittery, making the A78 5G more eye-catching.

The A78 5G is available in two colors: Glowing Purple and Glowing Black, where my review unit is the Glowing Purple color. This particular color paired with the OPPO Glow Design elevates the design of A78 5G. It also gives off a somewhat pink-yellow shimmery tone under lighting.

Besides, the OPPO A78 5G comes with a USB Type-C charging port, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and IPX4 Water Resistance which protects the device from splashing water.

Display

The OPPO A78 5G does disappoint in terms of the display as the A78 5G has a 6.56-inch IPS LCD display with a teardrop notch. It offers an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1612 and a 269 PPI density display.

Other than that, the A78 5G offers a 90Hz refresh rate and comprehensive eye protection to provide a comfortable viewing experience day or night. Also, it utilizes Panda Glass Protection as an alternative screen protection for the Gorilla Glass.

Camera

The OPPO A78 5G packs a 50MP Dual Camera setup with a LED flash at the bottom of a 2MP Depth Camera. Surprisingly, the A78 5G provides various camera features such as 108MP Ultra-Clear Image, Monochrome Video, Slow-mo, and Retouching.

Here are some pictures taken with the OPPO A78 5G. Overall, the image quality was fine and the colors presented appear to be more vibrant/colorful.

As for the 108MP Ultra-Clear Image mode, the OPPO A78 5G is able to capture 12,032 x 9,024 resolution images which are ideal for capturing detailed shots. Forgot to mention that this feature is called Extra HD and it can be found in the More tab.

These pictures are all taken with the Extra HD (108MP) features on the OPPO A78 5G. As you can see, all the pictures below will not look too pixelized even if you zoom in too much, keeping the edges and words sharp and clear.

Another video capture feature known as Monochrome Video in the A78 5G, allows users to capture certain colors (Red, Green, Blue) when recording, resulting in a more stylish way of video capturing. This feature can be found in the Filters section of the camera. Plus, the A78 5G is only capable of capturing video in 1080p@30fps or 720p@30fps.

Performance

The OPPO A78 5G is equipped with the weaker processor MediaTek MT6883 Dimensity 700, a 7nm processor in 2020. Meanwhile, its predecessor OPPO A77 5G uses a newer processor Dimensity 810 which offers roughly 10% improved performance compared to Dimensity 700.

The result of A78 5G in balance mode is 347,114 and in the performance mode, it can achieve up to 373,944 which is higher than the OPPO A77 5G. In return, the A78 5G power consumption will be higher and heats up in order to obtain the performance of A77 5G.

Furthermore, the A78 5G offers 8GB RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. In fact, the A78 5G delivers a RAM expansion feature where it allocates unused storage for 8GB of extended RAM to your device to reduce lag.

In addition, the A78 5G house a 5000 mAh battery capacity supported by Super Power Saving Mode and Super Night-time Standby Mode to further expand the battery life. It's handy to feature 33W SUPERVOOC charging, with the company claiming a full charge in 67 minutes.

Lastly, the A78 5G features an Ultra Volume Mode which boosts the volume by up to 200% whenever using the handset or speaker. However, as a person who always keeps the volume and notification sound as low as possible, I can’t find a reason to take advantage of this feature.

Buy or no buy?

Despite the OPPO A78 5G using an older MediaTek chipset than its predecessor, it is good enough for your daily usage. It is a great smartphone for mobile photography thanks to its Extra HD feature to capture 108MP images which produces sharp quality images and preserves more details.
