Intel Launches Rocket Lake-S Desktop Processors

Intel has launched its 11th Gen Intel Core S-series desktop processors, which also go by the codename Rocket Lake-S.

The Rocket Lake-S processors are based on the new 14nm Cypress Cove architecture (a backport of the 10nm Sunny Cove architecture). Intel says that they feature up to a 10% improvement in instructions per cycle compared to the previous generation and up to 50% better integrated graphics performance. The new processors have Intel Xe graphics architecture-based UHD graphics, and have support for Intel Deep Learning Boost and Vector Neural Network in addition to having “enhanced overclocking tools and features”.

“This generation includes real-time memory overclocking which enables changes to DDR4 frequency in real time, extending memory overclocking support for H570 and B560 chipsets allowing users to experience overclocking, Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) 2 and AVX-512 voltage guard band override, and an all new integrated memory controller with wider timings and Gear 2 support (in addition to Gear 1 support),” said Intel in a press release.

Additionally, the 11th-gen processors will feature 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes and include support for DDR4-3200, Thunderbolt 4, Intel Wi-Fi 6E. Other features include “enhanced media (10bit AV1/12bit high-efficiency video coding decode and end-to-end compression), enhanced display (Integrated HDMI 2.0, HBR3)”, and Intel Quick Sync Video.

The new processors are headed by the i9-11900K flagship, which sports a base clock speed of 3.5GHz and up to 5.3GHz single core clock speed/4.8GHz all core clock speed with Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost. The processor has eight cores, 16 threads, and 16MB of Intel Smart Cache. For comparison, the 10th gen Skylake-based i9-10900K also had up to a 5.3GHz single core and 4.8GHz all core clock speed with Thermal Velocity Boost, but had 10 cores, 20 threads, and 20MB of Intel Smart Cache.

There will be 19 Rocket Lake-S processors, including the eight-core i7-11700K and six-core i5-11600K. The i9-11900K is priced at US$539 (~RM2,220), the i7-11700K at uS$399 (~RM1,644), and the i5-11600K at US$262 (~RM1,079).
