Xiaomi has launched the Mi MIX FOLD, its first foldable phone. The Snapdragon 888-powered phone makes use of a U-shaped hinge, with Xiaomi saying that it subjected the phone to 200,000 bends of reliability testing and up to one million bends of extreme reliability testing. Its weight is said to be up to 27% lower than other foldables.

The phone marks the debut of Xiaomi’s Surge C1 processor, which serves to provide more accurate auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance. Another “first” that the phone features is the Liquid Lens technology, which is described as a lens-like structure with a film-wrapped transparent fluid. The liquid lens provides “3X optical zoom, up to 30X telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of 3cm”, as well as “high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and excellent resistance to extreme environments”, with Xiaomi saying that it can “maintain the fluid form in an environment from a low of -40°C to a high of 60°C”. Other camera-related features include a 108Mp main camera with a 7P lens and a 13MP 123° ultra-wide angel camera with smart switching and AI ultra-wide angle distortion correction. The front has a 20MP camera.

For its screen, the Mi MIX FOLD has a 8.01” WQHD+ OLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 900 nits of peak brightness and 600 nits overall brightness, and a 4,300,000:1 color contrast ratio. It also has Dolby Vision, HDR10+ support, and a DCI-P3 color gamut. The display supports several modes including split screen, multi-screen drag and drop, parallel windows, Desktop mode, and AI meeting assistant.

The phone also has an external 6.52-inch AMOLED display with a HD+ resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and 180Hz touch sampling rate. Like the internal display, the external display has a peak brightess of 900 nits and HDR10+ support, but has an overall brightness of 700nits and a 27:9 aspect ratio. The external display also sports a colour accuracy of JNCD≈0.55 and ΔE≈0.52. Both displays use Xiaomi’s AI algorithm for super resolution images and videos.

Inside, the Mi MIX FOLD has a built-in 5,020mAh battery that uses Xiaomi’s dual-battery parallel architecture and consists of a 2,460mAh and a 2,560mAh battery. 67W fast charging is supported, and Xiaomi says that the phone can be fully charged in 37 minutes. The phone also features CNT battery technology for safer and faster charging and longer battery lifespan.

Other features of the phone include quad speakers with SOUND BY Harman Kardon and a “butterfly-type” cooling system/ The cooling system makes use of large-area VC liquid cooling, thermal gel, and multilayer graphite sheets, among other heat dissipation methods. Xiaomi says that the total heat dissipation area is “as high as 22,583.7mm²”.

The Mi MIX FOLD offers both Standard and Ceramic Special Edition versions. The former has a 5th-gen Corning Gorilla Glass back cover with ceramic texture, while the latter has a black ceramic back with a special laser engraving, in addition to a gold middle frame and volume buttons. There are 12GB+256GB, 12GB+512GB, and 16GB+512GB 3,200MHz LPDDR5 + UFS3.1 configurations, with their respective prices being RMB 9,999 (~RM6,325), RMB 10,999 (~RM6,957), and RMB 12,999 (~RM8,222). The phone will be available for purchase in China starting from April 16, with pre-orders already open. There’s no word on a global release yet.
