Ubisoft has unveiled its new free-to-play game XDefiant, a 6v6 shooter with classes (called “factions”) inspired by other Tom Clancy games “and beyond”.
Among these factions are the Ghost Recon-like Wolves, the Splinter Cell-based Echelon, and The Division-inspired Outcasts and Cleaners. The Wolves are described in the reveal trailer as being tanks, while the Cleaners perform an assault role and have flamethrowers. The Echelon are the support class and have special goggles, while the Outcasts are the healers.
While only these factions have been revealed so far, Ubisoft says that more will be added in the future. Each faction comes with traits, abilities, and an “Ultra”. For equipment, they have primary and secondary weapons with attachments as well as a device. Players will be able to mix and match weapons from different factions.
XDefiant’s modes will include “competitive 6-v-6 arena and linear” offerings like Domination and Escort with maps combining indoor and outdoor environments. Ubisoft describes the gameplay as being fast-paced with “realistic” gunplay.
What’s shown of the game doesn’t look particularly impressive so far, but the free-to-play status helps with the appeal. There’ll also be crossplay at launch, with game’s platforms including Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Stadia, Luna, and Ubisoft Connect. The first test period for the game will kick off on August 5, with more tests planned for the winter. Players can sign up for the test here. #ubisoft #xdefiant
