Should You Update to iOS 18? Or Wait For iOS 18.1? Here's What You Need to Know

Apple has rolled out their latest iOS 18 to the public, which everyone has been buzzing about it since the WWDC announcement in June. And if you have still yet to update to the latest iOS, and is still thinking whether to jump on the bandwagon, there are a few things you should consider, especially if you’ve experienced Apple’s past iOS updates.

Sure, iOS 18 is a big update, but remember when iOS 17 came out around the same time last year? It was supposed to be the perfect partner for the iPhone 15, but things didn’t really go as smoothly as expected. The new iPhone 15 Pro models started heating up like nobody's business. Initially, people thought it was a hardware issue, but several users later pointed out that the overheating issues only occur within minutes after opening Instagram. Apple later admitted there was a glitch in the system, where third-party apps like Instagram, Asphalt 9 and Uber is overloading the A17 Pro chip's CPU, causing the overheating, where Apple eventually released a patch 2 weeks later to address the issue.

And now back to iOS 18. Every time Apple drops a new iOS, it’s often packed with bugs and glitches that take a few updates to iron out. So, if you’re not into being a beta tester for Apple, it’s a smart move to wait until iOS 18.1 or later when things are more stable.

Plus, one of the main reasons people are excited about iOS 18 is the new Apple Intelligence features—but here’s the kicker: those won’t even be available right away. They’re only coming with iOS 18.1 next month. Apple will be spreading out these AI features across several updates, with more rolling out in iOS 18.1 in October and iOS 18.2 in December. So, if you update to iOS 18 immediately, all you’re getting are some design tweaks and visual changes.

That said, if you’re really keen on customising your Home Screen or checking out the redesigned Control Center, there is still no harm updating to iOS 18, just we'd recommend waiting for a week or two to see if any notable issues arise. After all, when iOS 18.1 is released with tonnes of new features, it may not be any better than 18.0 in terms of bugs.
