Russia Is Investigating Netflix for Complaint Over LGBT Content

According to Reuters, Russian officials are investigating Netflix after the public commissioner for protecting families accused the company of violating a "gay propaganda" law. The commissioner claimed that Netflix had breached a law that bans distribution of "propaganda on non-traditional sexual relations" among Russians under 18 as some Netflix content with LGBTQIA+ themes was rated with a 16+ label.

The Interior Ministry is now looking at the appeal and the streaming company could be slapped with a fine of up to 1 million roubles (~RM56,215) or a temporary suspension of its service if Netflix is found to have broken the law.

A Netflix source told Vedomosti that the company has checked its series and films about the lives of members of the LGBT community earlier this month and didn't find any rated 16+.
