According to a recent report published by CINNO Research, MediaTek is the most popular SoC brand used in smartphones in China in the first quarter of 2022. In the Top 5 Smartphone SoC Vendors in the China market Q1 2022 report, MediaTek came in the first place, followed by Qualcomm and Apple in second and third place respectively.
The report reveals that smartphone SoC shipments in Q1 2022 were 74.39 million units, down 14.4% year-on-year and down 0.7% quarter-on-quarter. In the first place, MediaTek sold 30.7 million chipsets in Q1 2022, higher than the 25 million shipments it made in the previous quarter. Qualcomm, which came in second, shipped 26.7 million in Q1, seeing an increase from the 23.6 million units from the last quarter but lower than Q1 of 2021. In third place, Apple only shipped 12 million SoCs in Q1 2022, lower than its 18.4 million amount of chips shipped the previous quarter.
The rise in shipments from MediaTek is mainly thanks to its strategy and chipset catalogue offered in the past 6 months, including the Dimensity 920 5G chipset used in the Redmi Note 11 Pro+, realme 9 Pro+, and Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge. While Qualcomm is still stable at the top of the chart, the company's strategy of focusing on flagship chipsets over entry-level and mid-range ones leads to lower shipments overall although it means higher revenues.
Included in the top 5 list are HUAWEI's Hisilicon and UNISOC in the 4th and 5th place respectively.
