[Games Around the Corner] Week 38, 2020: The New, The Prequel, and The Remake

This week sees the release of a brand new game, a prequel, and a remake. One looks set to deliver a compelling sci-fi story, while another will let you shoot thousands of enemies. Check them out below.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

Developed by Vanillaware, the developers of Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a sci-fi game that’s part visual novel, part strategy game. The narrative side involves 13 stories that intertwine with each other and offers up a mystery to uncover. Meanwhile, the strategy side will have you commanding mechs against kaiju foes. The game will be out on PS4 on 22 September.

Serious Sam 4

The latest installment of the old school shooter series is a prequel with a big sense of scale. For instance, you can pilot a giant mech called the Popemobile that spits out bullets and missiles. In addition, developer Croteam have developed something called the Legion system, which allows some of Serious Sam 4’s levels to be populated with thousands of enemies. You can take on these enemies by yourself, or with up to three friends. Fans of the series can expect to see both new and familiar enemies and weapons. The game will be released on PC and Stadia on 24 September.

Mafia: Definitive Edition

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of 2002’s Mafia, an open world third-person shooter about a cab driver who finds himself getting involved in crime and rising through the ranks of the Mafia during the 1930s.

While open world games nowadays tend to be filled with map icons and activities, sometimes to the point of feeling bloated, Mafia: Definitive Edition’s faithfulness to the original means that the city is more of a backdrop that serves to provide atmosphere. Haden Blackman, the game’s director, told GameSpot, “We wanted to keep true to the spirit of the original, which is this kind of linear, mission-based narrative-driven experience. That's really what we've stuck to, but with that said, though, there are some opportunities for exploration.. There are several collectibles and things like that hidden in there. So, we treat the city as a character in its own right for all the Mafia games, but it really does serve as a kind of a backdrop to these missions.” The game will release on 25 September on PC, PS4, Xbox One.
