Apple has announced a new purple version of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, in addition to an iPhone accessory called the AirTag.
“This new color beautifully accentuates the flat aluminum edges of iPhone 12, which are perfectly color-matched to the precision-milled back glass,” Apple says of the devices’ purple versions. To add to the purple theme, the company is rolling out a new MagSafe Leather Case and Leather Sleeve in Deep Violet as well.
It’s not a complete purple fest though, as Apple also announced a Silicone Case with Capri Blue, Pistachio, Cantaloupe, and Amethyst colour options, in addition to a Leather Wallet with a colour called Arizona.
As for the AirTag, the small accessory is meant to locate lost items via Apple’s Find My app. It is equipped with the U1 chip made with polished stainless steel, and Apple also says that it uses 100% recycled tin in the main logic board’s solder. Apple promises privacy with end-to-end encryption and rotating Bluetooth signal identifiers to avoid location tracking.
To facilitate finding a missing AirTag, the device has Lost Mode and the ability to make sounds when moved after extended separation from its owner, while iOS devices can detect separated AirTags and “notify the user if an unknown AirTag is seen to be traveling with them from place to place over time”. Other features include IP67 water- and dust-resistance and a built-in speaker, removable cover for battery replacement, and personalisation options and accessories that can be purchased.
The purple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will be up for pre-order from April 23 and will be available from April 30, while the new MagSafe Leather Case, Leather Sleeve, Silicone Case, and Leather Wallet can be ordered already. Meanwhile, the AirTag will be available from April 30 in US$29 (~RM119) single packs or US$99 (~RM407) four packs.
The AirTag can also be obtained via the AirTag Hermès collaboration with Hermès. The AirTag Hermès consists of handcrafted leather accessories like the Bag Charm, Key Ring, Travel Tag, and Luggage Tag, which will be sold along with a “custom-engraved AirTag based on the brand’s iconic Clou de Selle signature”.
