Ubisoft, the developer behind Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs, has partnered up with Pathé to develop Notre-Dame on Fire, a location-based VR escape game based on Jean-Jacques Annaud's docudrama, as reported by Variety. The real incident took place in 2019 when a fire broke out beneath the roof of the cathedral in Paris.
According to Variety, the one-hour VR experience will put players in the shoes of the Parisian fire brigade to put off the flames that nearly destroyed the world-famous cathedral. This isn't the first time Ubisoft showcases the landmark as a detailed model of the cathedral has appeared in Assassin Creed's Unity, that's set in 18th century France.
During the production of his film, Annaud had approached Ubisoft. "He knew that we had a special attachment to Notre Dame," says Deborah Papiernik, Ubisoft Senior VP New Business and Strategic Alliances. "I guess that’s why he came to us. I don’t think he went to see [anyone else]."
Discussions between the two teams started in early 2021 and Ubisoft opted for a one-hour escape experience instead of a full-fledged game as the film is set to be released in March this year and there isn't enough time allowed.
"Like any escape game, it’s a question of puzzles and co-operating with your teammates," Papiernik explains. "The idea is to make your way through the cathedral to find relics and to fight the fire, because you have to save Notre Dame [before the clock runs out]."
While the film will be available in French theaters initially in March, Ubisoft's VR tie-in will be released worldwide in the same month.
