At the rate fast charging technology is improving, soon we'll just need to tap our phones on the charger for a full charge.
While that is yet to be made possible, Qualcomm's Quick Charge 5 (QC5) technology comes pretty darn close. With charging speeds of over 100W, it will top up an empty 4,500mAh battery to 50% in just 5 minutes, and fully charge it within 15 minutes.
According to the company, Quick Charge 5 is four times faster than Quick Charge 4, with efficiency improved by 70%.
If you're worried about the temperature and subsequent longevity of your battery, Qualcomm claims that QC5 runs up to 10° cooler than QC4. It also incorporates Dual/Triple Charge technology, adaptive input voltage, INOV4, Qualcomm Battery Saver, and Qualcomm's new Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology, which work together to maximize efficiency, increase safety, and extend the battery life cycle on devices.
QC5 is expected to be available commercially from Q3 2020 onwards. Do note that it will only be supported on phones that have Snapdragon 865 SoCs or newer though, so you'll need a compatible phone to benefit from the new standard.
