Wear OS 3 is coming in 2022, and Google has detailed which watches will first get the update.
The first few devices that will be eligible for the update are the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 Cellular/LTE, TicWatch E3, and “follow on TicWatch devices”. Aside from the TicWatches, the next generation of devices from Fossil Group, which launch later this year, will also be able to upgrade to Wear OS 3.
The update won’t be forced upon users, but will be offered on an opt-in basis instead. According to Google, the Wear OS 3 update will require users to reset their watch to factory settings due to the “extent of changes”.
For Wear OS devices that aren’t eligible for Wear OS 3 and for those who decide not to upgrade, Google says that it will provide security updates for “a minimum of two years from device launch”. It also said that it was “committed to bringing new app experiences”.
As for when exactly the new OS will arrive, Google says that it expects partners “to be able to roll out the system update starting in mid to second half of 2022”.
