Writer: Christopher ChuahChristopher Chuah

On the 27th of May 2024, also known as Dragon Quest Day, to commemorate the 38th anniversary of one of the longest gaming franchise of all time. On this momentous day, the franchise creator, Yuji Horii, took it to X (formerly known as Twitter) to provide an update on the next mainline entry of the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.

On social media, Horii said (as translated by Gematsu):

"Thank you so much to everyone for the many [Dragon Quest Day] congratulations! There has been some worry about Dragon Quest XII, but I was actually in a meeting [about it] until just a bit ago.

While I can’t share any details yet, I want it to be something worthy of the posthumous work of the two [Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama] who passed away. I’ll do my best!”

Dragon Quest: The Flames of Fate was first announced during a live-streamed event on May 2021. The game's logo and a few dialogues of the game were the only information that were released at the time. However, ever since then, no further information has been released.

Around the same time, Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda mentioned that the new game will be developed to with the next 10 to 20 years of the series in mind and that the game will take a more mature direction.

The one central question in the title is, “What is the purpose of life?” The narrative is teased to allow players to have options that have to do with the said purpose of life.
