ASUS Announces RTX 3080-Packing External GPU and ROG Flow X13 Gaming Laptop

ASUS Republic of Gamers announced the ROG Flow X13 and ROG XG Mobile. The former is described as the “first 2-in-1 convertible ROG gaming laptop”, while the latter is an “ultraportable” external GPU.

The ROG Flow X13 is an ultraslim 15.8 mm thin and 1.3 kg 13-inch laptop with a 360° hinge to let the device flip from laptop mode to “gaming, drawing, and presenting” positions. Two 16:10 display options are available: a 120Hz refresh option and an Ultra HD 4k resolution option. Both are factory-calibrated to PANTONE validation standard.

Inside, the laptop contains up to an AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS and a GeForce GTX 1650. It also has up to 32GB of LPDDR4X-4266 RAM and an up to 1TB SSD. It has a liquid metal thermal compound for CPU cooling, and also has two heatpipes, and Dual Arc Flow fans. The fans have a new 84-blade design with special tips that are meant to provide 13% better airflow without noise increase, and can be turned off with the 0dB Technology. There is a self-cleaning thermal module with anti-dust tunnels as well, which fits three large heatsinks and fan outlets inside.

The laptop comes with a lightweight 100W USB Type-C adapter, and its battery is said to have provide up to 10 hours of video playback. Other features include Two-Way AI Noise Cancellation, Dolby Atmos, 5.1.2-channel surround sound, and an “edge-to-edge keyboard design” that offers a “full-sized, desktop-style layout”. The back of the keyboard is raised by an ErgoLift hinge to provide a better typing angle when the laptop is opened. Connectivity-wise, there is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, an HDMI 2.0b port, and a 3.5 mm jack. It also has Wi-Fi 6 support.

As for the ROG XG Mobile, it’s an RTX 3080 or RTX 3070-equipped external GPU that is described as having seamless integration with the ROG Flow X13. It is also described as being a “fraction of the size” of other external GPUs.

The XG Mobile has a custom PCIe 3.0x8 interface and a dedicated USB 3.2 Gen 2 link for an I/O hub. It also has Gigabit Ethernet support and various I/O ports. The external GPU makes use of an integrated 280W AC adapter to power both the XG Mobile and Flow X13. For cooling, it has a vapor chamber that is said to provide 54% more contact surface area than heat pipes.
