Planet Computers has announced its flagship Astro Slide, a 5G phone that’s the first “in the world to features a full physical keyboard”. The device was backed on Indiegogo, where it raised RM6,807,341.
The less-than-300g phone is powered by an 8-core 5G processor and has an AMOLED FHD+ display with Gorilla glass protection. It has 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal memory, and a mini-SD card slot. Other slots include dual nano SIM slots. The phone has e-SIM as well.
The Astro Slide’s rear features a 48MP camera, while the front has a 13MP camera. Other features include a fingerprint sensor, NFC, GPS, Bluetooth, and a USB-C port. Its slide-out keyboard offers 24 keyboard layout options including “Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and both UK and US English, as well as a wide range of European keyboards”.
The phone has a 4,000 mAh lithium-ion battery with 10 watt wireless charging and MediaTek 5G UltraSave. It uses Android 11 as its OS, and can also “be set up to run Linux alongside Android”.
In a press release, Planet Computers CEO Dr Janko Mrsic-Flogel described the Astro Slide as “a no-compromise 5G device for people that create content on the move”.
“Astro Slide is equally easy-to-use as a standalone smartphone as it is as a micro-computer,” Mrsic-Flogel said. “It is powerful enough that users do not need to carry a laptop or tablet with them but still slips into a shirt or jacket pocket. Astro Slide is perfect for keyboard lovers who want the freedom to be productive and create on the move - without carrying several devices.” Astro Slide will be released globally sometime in Summer 2021.
