And Another One: Tencent Plants Strategic Investment in PlatinumGames

Writer: StephanieStephanie

PlatinumGames, the developer of popular titles such as Bayonetta, Astral Chain, and NieR:Automata, has confirmed that they have taken a capital investment from Chinese gaming giant Tencent.

President and CEO Kenichi Sato did not state how large the investment was, but vowed that it "would not affect" the structure or independence of PlatinumGames.

This isn't Tencent's only investment - they also have control in numerous other creators of popular titles, including:

  • Riot Games (League of Legends) - 100%

  • Epic Games (Fortnite)- 40%

  • Bluehole (PUBG)- 11.5%

  • Activision Blizzard (Overwatch, Hearthstone etc.)- 5%

  • Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed, Far Cry etc.) - 5%

Currently, there has been no direct evidence of Tencent exerting pressure to censor or otherwise influence the decisions of these companies, but their influence may still be present, as these companies undoubtedly want to stay in Tencent's good books.

Either way, Tencent's investment into PlatinumGames is a timely one that may fuel the studio to newer heights and financially enable them to continue pumping out the good shit.
